Mount Toubkal, the highest point of North Africa with its 4167m, was one of the goals of this trip.
I have accompanied this detailed account of few photos for those who would like to go there.
The Toubkal ascent can be done in 2 days from Imlil (1750m, 70km from Marrakech – easily accessible by taxi or car).
On the first day, there are 1500m of altitude gain that await us through a short forest and a mule track very well marked. Of course, we chose to carry use the services of a local company called Toubkal Trekking that arranged our 2 days toubkal trek.
We did this Trek in summer time. It is very hot in Morocco in August … and there is a lot of distance to the refuge … (about 12km). Very quickly, the scenery becomes arid and desertic and will hardly change between 2000 and 4000m of altitude. Only a few refreshments (up to 2600m and 1 € Coke!) And other herds of goats bring a little animation to this end of the world where we are among the last of the day to climb to the refuge.
It took us 5 hours to reach the Refuge Neltner (CAF refuge) at 3200m. We got there, and we found our cook already prepared a welcome tea for us! we sat done for it, and took off our stinky shoes for a relax! After that, we were led to our dormitory where we stored our bags , and went down to have a hot shower!
We had an early dinner so as to start our climb a bit earlier in the morning! The next morning, woke up at 5:00 a.m and started at 6am for the 1000m final climb to the summit. It is just fresh and we opt for a light pants to avoid having to change the way.
It has nothing to do with yesterday. The slope is strong and regular and we finally gain altitude easily. We followed the steps of our local guide Mohamed, who took great care of us along the way! we made frequent stops to gain breath! It’s not that easy walking uphill!
The arrival at Toubkal pass (3900m) begins to leave traces on most trekkers … It must be said that we see everything on this mountain
There remains only a long ridge to the summit, sunny but windy. The perspectives are then exceptional, despite a haze of heat that attenuates the colors and terrain. We finally got to the Top, amazing views over the High Atlas Mountains, and way far to the desert !
After a short breakt on the peak: we had small pic-nic on top of mount toubkal before we walked back down via the same way to the Refuge where we had a very delicious lunch prepared by our cook Lahcen!
Then, we had to leave the refuge towards Imlil valley; we walked back downhill via the same route as the first day!
It was a long day; it took us 12 hours from the refuge to the summit and back to Imlil! we had very sore legs! You should be very fit if you want to do this Trek! It’s very challenging!
We got back to Imlil valley around 3 p.m, we had a tea at a gudesthouse before our transport came to pick us up & back tp Marrakech.
All in all, it was an amazing adventure! but again you should be fit enough if you want to climb this Mount Toubkal in 2 days!
